About West Palm Beach
Two railroads, Henry Flager’s Florida East Coast Railroad and the Juniper and Lake Worth Celestial Railroad, opened up West Palm Beach to interstate trade and tourism in the late 1800s. The 52 square mile area is 65 miles northwest of Miami. In 1909, Palm Beach County, the county to which West Palm Beach belongs, was carved from Dade County. It became Florida’s 47th county.
The Parks and Recreation Department of Palm Beach County has 79 parks. Two water parks are included. Many of the county parks feature beaches, trails, camp sites, and athletic facilities. Over 8,000 acres of land are included in the County parks.
Economics: Agriculture, construction, and tourism are Palm Beach County’s leading industries. Over 53,000 jobs are held by employees of tourism-related businesses such as transportation services, stores, restaurants and hotels.
Demographics: In 2012, the population of Palm Beach County was 1.33 million people. It is the third largest Florida county. The second largest is Miami-Dade that had a population of 2.55 million people.
Weather: Daytime temperatures during the winter average 74 degrees. Summer daytime temperatures average 90 degrees. Rainfall average is 62 inches per year.
